Jörg Hessenmüller took over the leadership of Standard Chartered Bank AG in Frankfurt on 1 October 2026. As Chief Executive Officer, he is responsible for the international bank’s continental Europe hub.
The Frankfurt entity enables Standard Chartered to serve clients in the European Economic Area and is integrated into the bank’s European activities. Hessenmüller joined Standard Chartered Bank AG as Chief Operating Officer in 2024 and subsequently also took on responsibility for technology and operations in Europe.
Regulation, technology and international business
The CEO role combines several leadership topics that are increasingly converging in European banking: regulatory responsibility, operational resilience, technology, international client relationships and managing a cross-border business.
Assessment
For the financial services executive market, the internal appointment is noteworthy. A COO with additional technology and operations responsibility moves to the top of the European hub. This underlines how strongly operational transformation and technology leadership have become part of CEO requirement profiles in regulated financial institutions.
In banks in particular, classic sales or capital markets experience is increasingly no longer sufficient at the top level. In CEO successions, boards must examine more closely how regulation, technology, operational resilience and international stakeholder management are brought together.
